1, What year did you make your first quilt? Traditional or art? I made my first art quilt in 2003. I've never made a traditional quilt.
2. What is the first show, and year, that you ever entered your art quilts? Venue? My very first art quilts were published in the book "Material Visions" in 2004. I was a featured artist and 9 of my quilts were published. As for an
exhibition, with a quilt, I think it was 2007? and the International
exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute. I've been in many exhibitions
since around 1998, with my mixed media or watercolor work.
3. What is your artistic style? Impulsive, colorful and a little ragged on the edges.
4. Have you ever changed your style from when you started making quilts? I still work intuitively, without a plan. I still rip my cloth, rather
than cut it. I enjoy surface design now, I'd never heard of it when I
first started making art quilts. Now my work is done in small, detailed, intricately stitched components and then assembled to make a larger quilt.
5. What other style in quilt making piques your interest? Exploration in surface design.
6. What other medium in art influences your work as a fiber artist? Sketching
and watercolor is something I do on a regular basis. And often my
sketches will appear in my surface design, or as a stitched drawing in
my quilts. My mixed media work influences my quilts in a collage technique, and also adding paper or any non-cloth objects to my quilts.
7. What do you have coming up? Shows, Articles in magazines, Books, etc. Teaching
at mixed media art retreats (CREATE in Southern California, New Jersey
and Chicago, plus Art Unraveled in Phoenix.) Teaching in Italy this
year, and Italy and France next year.
8. Where will your art take you from here? I've been traveling and teaching. I'm creating more online classes,
based on my work.I look forward to being published in magazines and
books.
9. Describe your studio space: A
spare bedroom in my home. Organized, but cluttered, packed with art and
inspiration and unfinished projects that I could pick up right now and
work on.
10. What was the biggest challenge you have encountered in the making of your art quilt for "An Exquisite Moment?" I could have kept stitching and layered it......for many more months!
Jane is always inspiring to me. I didn't remember that she had never made a traditional quilt! What a lovely artist and lovely person.
