Artist Profile: Hope Wilmarth

Hope Wilmarth
Spring, Texas

1. What is sitting on the edges of your work table? Bits of material, rotary cutter, computer, rulers, threads....all the usual suspects.

2. If someone looked beneath the surface, what could be revealed that we might not know about you? What you see is pretty much what you get. But I did go to school with Luci B. Johnson who is still my friend of so many years.

3. What occupies the space between your sewing machine and your cutting table? Scraps of material in disarray!

4. What is the most exquisite moment in your artistic life? When I got the call from Visions Contemporary Art Museum, San Diego, that they wanted to purchase "Urban Cathedral" for their permanent collection!

5. Do you have daily rituals in your studio? No...just get to work.

6. Reflecting on the quilts that you have made, which one stands out to you? "Be Someone", Dinner@Eight, 2017.

7. What do you have an affinity for in your work? piecing in black and white.

8. What kinds of patterns do you use in your work to create interest and texture? My go to style would be intuitive piecing.

9. What personal iconography is identifiable to you exclusively in your work? My fine line work, cutting fabric in 3/4" strips, piecing together to create "fabric" then cutting and re-piecing.

10. What was your inspiration for the Best of Dinner at Eight? A photo taken on the Oregon coastline of waves hitting against the rocky shore causing a spectacular explosion of water.
